Pathways to Abstraction: Experimental Drawing and Abstract Painting workshops, Melbourne, 2017.8/2/2017
The sharing and receiving of knowledge, within the context of creative praxis sits at the forefront of my interests as a professional artist, researcher and educator. My recent workshops: Pathways to Abstraction and Experimental Drawing, held in Melbourne, Australia, 2017 proved to be a rewarding exercise for both the students and myself.
Over a 5 week period the students were taught to think - see - do - and to reflect on the processes of making that were intrinsically tied to 'materiality' as both the concept and context for making. My teaching methodology adheres to 'thinking through practice' - that aims to holistically engage the student in an all over [bodily] experience. In doing so, the student is intellectually enabled to find their own, unique and individual visual voice. At the same time, this process of teaching provides the student with aesthetic and material knowledge that helps shape and inform their mark making strategies. The resulting visual outcomes were a series of deep, aesthetic works of art that spoke of the individual mark, on paper and canvas that celebrated the individual and the collective all at the same time.
